How many kids get to build an airplane? It's a unique opportunity. This program is just one of several EAA Chapter 839 activities.
This is the local chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association
It started January 2019. I decided to get kids interested in aviation, and I'd do that by teaching them how to build a plane. I selected the Minimax 1650R EROS as it's all wood and a small basic aircraft. This activity is governed by the Experimental Aircraft Association and we follow their procedures. We raise money by selling chocolate bars and trinkets at various public events. We always have a donation jar available.
The kids are great and really enjoy the project. They range in age from 10 to 18. They will each experience the personal satisfaction making a piece of the aircraft structure on their own.
This is what the kids are building. It's a Minimax 1650R EROS. It will cost (ballpark) about $10,000 plus another several thousand for the engine (Rotax 503). The aircraft is mostly wood construction and covered with fabric. It carries one person, the pilot. The engine will produce 50 horsepower.
To learn the following: read and understand the plans; how to use a ruler and protractor; woodworking; safely use various tools; develop mathematical skills (fractions!); aircraft structures; aerodynamics; problem solving and working with others.
All while having fun!
We would like to thank all who supported us by helping or donating money or buying candy and trinkets. In particular, we want to thank Fred Duckloe who donated $600 on behalf of Pegasus Airpark to get this program started. We also would like to thank Mary Parker for her generous financial support.
